Teach and Engage Multilingual Students

The Programs in TESOL offer professional training to students planning to teach English as a foreign language in a variety of settings:

  • TESOL certificate that will allow them to teach EFL abroad or teach ESL local programs for immigrants and refugees
  • Endorsement in TESOL added to an existing Ohio teaching license and teach in the public school system
  • M.Ed in TESOL in order to teach overseas, at community college ESL programs, or private schools

Program Highlights

Multilingual students in the US and abroad benefit from faculty who are trained in second language pedagogy and take into account who their students are. During the TESOL program, you will learn how to teach and engage multilingual learners.

Learning Methodology

Students can take classes at their own pace. Students can take 1 course or 2-3 courses per semester.

Admissions Requirements

  1. Apply for admission to Cleveland State University
  2. One official copy of transcripts from all institutions where you obtained a bachelor’s degree;
  3. A cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or above is required if degree is less than 1-5 years, GPA 3.0 if your degree is over 6 years.

International Students: Must obtain a TOFEL score of 65 (interest-based) or 525 (written exam), or equivalent in IELTS or ITEP proficiency tests. Students will have the opportunity to take ESL courses in the English Language Institute at CSU to improve their skills. Completion of the advanced level with a grade of 80% or above in CSU’s Intensive Language Program. Students with extended teaching experience may petition to waive EDC 500 & EST 573.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition and financial aid for CSU programs are kept competitive so you can receive the education you deserve. Tuition for online programs and courses follows the same fee structure as traditional, on-campus programs and courses. Current CSU Graduate tuition costs can be found on the Bursar’s website.

Approximately 70% of CSU’s students receive some form of financial assistance. The University participates in or administers all the major federal and state grant and loan programs. In addition, CSU provides University grants and scholarships.

To begin the financial aid process, you will need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You must file a FAFSA every year after January 1st to receive your financial aid. Cleveland State University’s financial aid school code is 003032.

The faculty members who teach online are the same faculty members who teach our traditional, on-campus courses. Student Success Coaching

At CSU, you will be paired with a Student Success Coach to support you on your journey from acceptance into a program to graduation. Coaches help with:

  • Study strategies
  • Focus techniques
  • Work-life balance
  • Academic support resources
  • Navigating University policies and procedures
  • Resolving issues and locating the right resources

Student Success Coaches will reach out to you for a welcome call early in your program. Coaches can help you create an academic success plan with strategies and goals that will help you be successful. Student Success Coaches are available to you throughout your program. Student Success Coaches do not replace academic advisors or other counselors, but rather work as a team with them to provide you with all the right resources.
