Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW)

Graduate with your MSW and qualify to take any state LSW exam across the country. This accredited, evidence-informed, and trauma-focused program allows you to earn your MSW as quickly as possible (30 credit hours for BSW-degreed students who meet additional entrance criteria; 60 credit hours for all others), with certificates available in gerontology, school social work, and chemical dependency. The MSW degree will allow you to become independently licensed, opening up doors to private practice, management, and social work agency leadership.

Time to Complete: 2 semesters (BSW degreed) to 4 semesters (other qualifying undergraduate degrees)

Application Requirements for Traditional MSW:

  1. Undergraduate degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  2. Apply for admission to Cleveland State University
  3. Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework.
  4. Have taken at least 8 social sciences classes
  5. Two letters of recommendation
  6. Required essay - three to five typed pages (1.5 spacing) explaining:
    • Why the student wants to be a social worker
    • Why a graduate degree is felt to be necessary to fulfill the applicant's personal or professional objectives
    • The applicant's views regarding diversity in society
    • A situation in which the student was the recipient/provider of help, emotionally, socially, or economically
    • A description of the applicant's previous social work/human service work experience.

Application Requirements for Advanced Standing MSW:

  1. BSW from a CSWE accredited program within the last 5 years.
  2. Minimum 3.2 cumulative AND 3.5 in social work classes GPA.
  3. Apply for admission to Cleveland State University
  4. Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework.
  5. Two letters of recommendation
  6. Copies of undergraduate field evaluations
  7. Required essay (see description above)

Definitely yes! The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts a 12 to 15 percent increase in social work jobs through 2030 across all professional sectors.

Aren't social workers underpaid?

Social workers make up the majority of mental health and behavioral health therapists and there is professional strength in numbers. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the 2021 median pay for social workers was $50,390, with significantly higher salaries for those living in higher cost of living areas and for those who are independently licensed.

When are the online MSW classes offered?

You may take classes over the 15-week semester or in an accelerated 8-week format during the Fall and Spring semesters, as well as two 6-week summer terms.
